September 2018

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS:  The 9th INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND PUBLIC POLICY will be held in Tromse, Norway from June 17th to 20th, 2019, bringing together career development leaders, researchers and policy influencers to work across international borders to strengthen career development.  The Symposium website is https://www.kompetansenorge.no/iccdpp2019. The Symposium vision, which has guided all symposia from the first one held in Canada in 1999, is to provide a forum to bring together policy, research and practice by inviting country teams representing each of these areas.

The 2019 Symposium 2019 focus is Leading career development services into an uncertain future: Ensuring access, integration and innovation. The four organizing themes of the Symposium will be:

  • Theme #1: Context and challenges for career development policy.
  • Theme #2: What and who is career development for?
  • Theme #3: Integrating career development into wider society.
  • Theme #4: Leading innovative change for the future.

The Canadian Council for Career Development (3CD) is pleased to accept nominations from those interested in putting their names forward as potential members of Team Canada.  Some important information for your consideration:

  • This is not a typical conference at all.  There is considerable work prior to, during and after the Symposium.  As a team member, you should be prepared to commit approximately 15 days of your time:
  • Before the Symposium: Writing Canada’s Country Paper covering the Symposium four themes listed above and reading all Synthesis Papers. Synthesis Papers are summaries of the key points in each theme across all country papers received. Each is less than 20 pages in length.  All Country Papers will also be available on the website and delegates are encouraged to review these as well, time permitting.
  • During: Actively participating in all aspects of the Symposium, including daily meetings with teammates to develop Canada’s Action Plan
  • After: Mobilizing stakeholders and implementing Canada’s Action Plan.
  • We are currently exploring possible funding avenues and there may be some limited support to cover some costs associated with participation.   However, even if successful, funds will not cover all costs and delegates will need to self-fund or find alternate sources of financial support.
  • Teams are small (2-6 individuals) and are ideally constituted to be balanced among leaders in the career development field who are in tune with front-line practice realities and priorities, applied  researchers with expertise in career and labour market issues, policy influencers drawn from education, labour, mental health and employer representatives.  Team members should ideally also have expertise/experience relevant to the Symposium themes/sub-themes.

If you are interested in putting your name forward for consideration, please send an email to [email protected] with your name, organization & title, contact information and a brief paragraph delineating why you believe you are well-positioned to contribute to Team Canada by October 22/2018.

The 3CD will ensure that the key discussions, promising policies and practices and the Symposium 2019 Communiqué are all widely shared,  so while very few can actually attend, the planning and follow-up will be as inclusive as possible.

We look forward to receiving nominations by October 22.

Canada Career Month (CCM) is almost here!

The 2018 CCM theme for November 2018 is “I Know I Can Because”.  Throughout the month, Canadians will be invited to share their skills on social media using the hashtag #iknowicanbecause. We also want Canadians to know that, if they are having difficulty articulating their skills, our field ready to help. You can learn more about how to get involved in CCM at careermonth.ca.

Also, be sure to visit our 2018 CCM theme page to make a skills pledge, become a champion and much more!

In addition to posting about your skills and visiting careermonth.ca, there are lots of ways to get involved this year such as:

  • Sponsorship: 3CD is seeking sponsors for Canada Career Month to help us promote career development across Canada.  Attached is a flyer explaining the benefits of sponsorship.  We are still seeking sponsors, so if you know anyone that might be interested in this opportunity, please contact [email protected]
  • Events: Having events throughout the month of November that let Canadians know that career development matters is critical to the success of Canada Career Month.  We invite you to promote the month by hosting an event and co-branding the event with Canada Career Month logos (logos attached).  A few ideas to consider…
    • Host a skill demonstration marathon;
    • Organize a reverse career fair where employers are invited to learn about the skills of local community members;
    • Invite local community members to talk about the skills they use at work through a human library event.
    • Take part in a local career fair, or host your own!
    • Post videos about what career development means to you, your clients, or your local community using the hashtag #iknowicanbecause

Really, the sky is the limit!  You can also ask others in your network to host or attend events in their communities.  For this, we’ve attached a poster and a soft-launch letter that you can use to let your networks know about planning events with CCM.  If you plan on hosting an event, please let us know about it so that we can post it on the career month web site.  Contact [email protected] with your details.

  • Media: To help you profile your event in the media, we’ve attached a media outreach guide and a social media guide to support you.

Whether you are sponsoring, hosting an event or just spreading the word about CCM 2018, please use the Career Month hashtag (#careermonth) as much as possible in your social media feeds throughout November (and in the lead up to Canada #careermonth).

Check out www.iknowicanbecause.com  to get involved in CCM 2018 and visit www.careermonth.ca to find out more about the CCM initiative.
